of 72
The Rule of 72 is an investing rule of thumb that allows you to easily predict how long it takes your investment amount to double. Simply take the number 72 and divide it by your invested rate of return, and you will end up with the approximate number of years it takes your money to 2x.
For example, if we invested $100,000 and received a 10% annual return, it would take approximately 7 years to turn our $100,000 into $200,000 (72 / 10 = 7.2). It becomes especially important to pay attention to this before retirement, when you are focused on growth as opposed to wealth preservation.
